Hiking in Oldambt
Oldambt is a beautiful area to discover on foot. You will find new nature reserves, or old reserves that have been renewed, in between Blauwestad, Winschoten and Bad Nieuweschans. Hiking along the banks of the Oldambtmeer or on top of the dikes along the Dollard is amazing. You could also go for a city tour through Winschoten, together with a volunteer explaining everything there is to know about this old city.
Hiking in Midwolderbos
Behind the Ennemaborgh in Midwolda an old forest is located, that used to be used for sylviculture. The area was transformed to a natural forest by grazing Konik horses. Two large and a few smaller ponds are located in the south-eastern corner. This area is ideally suited as a water bird sanctuary. Het Groninger Landschap foundation built a 6 km route (which can be shortened to 3 km) in the Midwolderbos (forest).
The hike-network Waddenwandelen (Wad hiking) works exactly the same as the junctions for cyclists. Along the trails you will find arrows and numbers to show you which way to go. Hike on historic sidewalks, farmland trails and old inner dikes alongside the most beautiful spots of Oldambt. Hikers can easily plan their own routes. From a Sunday walk to a multiple day trip. An advanced website offers useful information and apps that allow you to plot routes. You will also find some day routes ranging from 10 to 20 kilometres, planned by locals. These routes will bring hikers to special places and locations known from old stories. For instance, within the Oldambt there is a route called ‘Graanrepubliek’ (Grain Republic). It is a 17,9 kilometre hike that provides tangible examples of the history of Oldambt, the richness of the gentlemen farmers, the grain barons and the tough life for farmworkers. Take a Break… … at a Resting Point
Let’s have a break. You can do this wherever you want of course, however, it might be nice to take a break at an unexpectedly beautiful spot, at a private property, alongside the walking or cycling route. Resting points are available throughout the region. They can be recognised by the resting point sign. The resting points allow you to catch some breath and to enjoy a voluntary presentation of coffee, tea or lemonade, with a treat. At the page Rustpunten in Oldambt you will find all the resting points in the area.
Oldambt knows two Long Distance Walking Trails. The Wadden- en Wierdenpad (LAW 5-5) runs from Bad Nieuweschans to Lauwersoog, along the coast of the North Sea. The Noaberpad (LAW 10) runs from Bad Nieuweschans to bordertown Emmerich aan de Rijn and therefore runs alongside the border towards the south.
