Sights of Oldambt
You will be short of eyes in Oldambt
Towers, churches and old factory buildings have gained more and more character over the years. They look lived-through and show the atmosphere of times gone by. Similarly, the historical buildings in Oldambt. For example, the Old Remittance Bad Nieuweschans or farmhouses near the Oldambtmeer. Pay attention to the many works of art that you can see here and there. On roundabouts, on the dike or at one of the many historical buildings.
Historical farmhouses from the Golden Age
Farmers built big farmhouses in Oldambt during the economic Golden Age. Farmhouses that still enchant the beautiful land. Most of them still function as farms. Sometimes combined with a Bed & Breakfast, gallery, tearoom or for the sales of local products. Some shine on the list of monumental heritage.
Looking around in and around the Ennemaborgh
The Ennemaborgh in Midwolda was already built in the 13th or 14th century. The house was a lot smaller than it is now. Moreover, it was probably located one and a half kilometres outside the village in an unexplored fen and woodland. When the village Midwolda was forcefully moved, Ennemaborgh came to lie against this village. In the 16th century the house was extended with a borg (mansion). Next to it is the coach house, which now houses a restaurant. Behind the borg is a forest of 2.5 kilometres. In spring the front garden is a true color splendor of blooming flowers, for example farmer crocuses. Since 1992, an artist called Maya Wildevuur has resided in the borg.
The Old Tram Depot
Next to the station of Bad Nieuweschans you can find the former locomotive depot. The monumental heritage was aimed at storing steam locomotives until 1935. After the war it was used as the GADO’s bus garage and in 1984 it became the grain storage of the Noordelijke Graanhandel BV. Until the end of 2015, the tasting room ‘The Old Remise’ was located here. Since this moment the industrial monument hasn’t had a permanent filling.
New future for “De Toekomst”
In 1901 the first strawboard bales rolled of the conveyor belt in the old strawboard factory ‘De Toekomst’ (the future) along the highway A7. The gorgeous building by architect P.G. Cremer from Nieuwolda has been renovated and will soon serve as a water education centre, museum, meeting space and event hall. Nice to know: director Paul Verhoeven was also charmed by De Toekomst. He made recordings for some of his film ‘Zwartboek’.
Here and there are many statues in Oldambt. Sometimes strikingly prominent, sometimes modest. Sometimes figurative, sometimes abstract. Most famous is the statue of Adolf van Nassau in Heiligerlee and since 2009 Sicco Mansholt has had his own statue in Blauwestad. But also in the suction dredge tubes on the dyke of the Carel Coenraadpolder and the artwork ‘Waaibloei’ near Nieuwe Statenzijl are special.
The Triadeem in Blauwestad is a real art experience, made of boulders. To their hearts content children may affect the water flow and move the rocks. Around the hill are wooden seating areas, a grove and play elements. The location is at Strand Zuid in Blauwestad.
